Social on behalf of the Directorate General Employment, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities between February 18th and March 22nd, 2008. The report examines discrimination on the grounds of gender, ethnic origin, religion or beliefs, age, disability and sexual orientation.

The report provides information on the impact of the recent events in the Ponticelli district of Naples on Roma, immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers. It brings together the basic facts on these violent attacks as well as background information regarding the situation of Roma in Italy. It also describes efforts to address the situation by the Italian Authorities and the International Community, in particular the European Parliament, the Council of Europe, the OSCE, and Civil society organisations.

The report looks at how France uses a vaguely defined ‘terrorism association offense’ to arrest large numbers of people based on minimal evidence. Human Rights Watch documented credible allegations that terrorism suspects are subjected to oppressive questioning in police custody, linked to a policy that delays a suspect’s access to a lawyer.

It covers information, events and developments related to racism and xenophobia in the EU for the year 2007, which was the Agency’s focus of work prior to the adoption of its Multiannual Framework in February 2008.

Im November 2006 publizierte die Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung die Studie «Vom Rand zur Mitte». In dieser Repräsentativbefragung wurde mit einem Fragebogen das Ausmaß rechtsextremer Einstellungen in Deutschland erhoben. Erneut unter der wissenschaftlichen Leitung der Leipziger Wissenschaftler Dr. Oliver Decker und Prof. Dr. Elmar Brähler ist nun eine Nachfolgestudie im Auftrag der Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung entstanden, die die Frage nach den Ursachen für rechtsextreme Einstellungen vertieft behandelt.

La Halde a remis son rapport sur les discriminations à l’emploi, basé sur 20 entreprises et 1500 offres. Le taux de discrimination statistiquement établi est de 23% moins de chances pour les candidats présentant des origines africaines ou arabes et de 42% pour les plus de 45 ans. L’enterprise la plus discriminante est une filiale d’ACCOR.

In the framework of the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue on 4 June 2008 the European Commission in cooperation with the European Network Against Racism organized a debate under the title «Couscous Culture: is that what Intercultural Dialogue in the workplace is all about?» There were discussed challenges and opportunities posed by an increasingly intercultural work environment.

The European Union’s Fundamental Rights Agency (FRA) will join UEFA, FARE, FIFPro, football players and others in signing a «pledge» supporting respect for diversity at a launch event for EURO 2008™ on 7 June in Basel, Switzerland. This «pledge» is timely as a spate of events in Europe over the past year has shown that the spectrum of racism and other forms of intolerance still haunt the sport.

The European Parliament adopted a report calling on the Commission to adhere to its commitment to propose a «comprehensive directive» to combat any discrimination in access to goods and services on grounds of sex, race, religion, disability, age or sexual orientation. The own-initiative report adopted with 362 votes in favour, 262 against and 56 abstentions, also demands effective sanctions and support for victims.

Around 200 Europeans on the front line of the battle against social exclusion will today meet EU and national policy makers in Brussels for a direct dialogue. They will discuss issues ranging from minimum income to housing, social services and services of general interest. The annual event aims to include marginal groups in the process of seeking solutions and building policies to improve their lives.

This report focuses on discrimination against migrants and minorities in housing in 15 Member States of the European Union. It finds that in different Member States there are similar mechanisms of exclusion, discrimination in housing of migrants and minorities. According to the report integration in this field can become politicised, and it is not enough justified that involuntary special mixing would be appropriate for integration.
